Support for Former Employees

The G.C. Murphy Co.® Foundation has no control over pension or insurance plans, and has no connection, officially or otherwise, with any benefit plans. When the Company was taken over by Ames Department Stores and McCrory Corp., most personnel records were destroyed or lost.

Many former Company employees who are near retirement or who suffered a death in their family need to know if they are eligible for pension or life insurance benefits.

However, Ed Davis of the Foundation, who worked in employee and public relations for the Company, has provided the following information that we believe is accurate:

Free and Contributory Life Insurance

After Ames Department Stores filed for bankruptcy protection, it stopped paying the premiums on the life insurance policies (held by Travelers) for former G.C. Murphy Co.® employees. The policies were sold by Travelers to Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in late 2002 or early 2003.

Because Ames stopped paying the premiums, those policies are reportedly frozen at 29 percent of their 1986 value. If you believe that you are owed a benefit from one of these policies, contact:
